69 Grizzly Bear and Salmon Glacier
Granduc Mine Road, British Columbia, Canada

I rolled my van slowly and silently down the road, watching the bear move along behind the bushes. Eventually he came to a gap and turned around. I got another picture.

A real unstaged shot of a grizzly bear this big is a rare opportunity, but to get him with the glacier behind - once in a lifetime! I only had a short telephoto, and no time to switch to my higher resolution Canon, but I am pleased that I got the shot at all.

Next the bear crossed the road and went around the corner. Two German motorcyclists came up behind me - I flagged them down and warned them. They drove slowly around the corner, then came back, fast, and roared off the way they had come.

Meanwhile the bear had gone up the slope and circled around behind me. He came right up behind my van, perhaps wondering how to get the meat (me) out of the can (van). But then he lost interest and disappeared over the edge down towards the glacier and I didn't see him again. My last day in Alaska - WOW!
