| I was driving slowly along the Granduc Mine Road, looking for a spot to take my next panorama of the Salmon Glacier, when I saw an animal cross the road ahead. When I got to that point I stopped and looked in the bushes. A grizzly bear reared up to look back at me. He was over seven feet tall.
I was safe in my van, but if I had been on foot I would probably have been charged and mauled, maybe killed. Ten years ago in this very area a man was killed and eaten by a bear. Luckily I had a camera handy, my trusty Olympus Pen, and I started taking pictures. The bear decided that my van was bigger than he was (6000 pounds to his 1000) and moved away behind the screen of willow bushes. |
