| After three weeks of splendid fall colors I should have been tired of it. But here, starting back along the Alaska Highway through the Yukon Territory, I encountered the best color of all.
I had been getting frustrated (again) about vegetation blocking views, especially of the splendid Icefield Ranges and Kluane Mountains to the south. I spotted a faint wheel track heading off to the south and decided to investigate. I walked for ten minutes, singing and making noise to alert bears of my presence. Suddenly the forest ended at a gravel pit, and just beyond there was the crest of an Ice Age moraine. It dropped sharply from the crest down to a broad valley and gave me just the panoramic view that I wanted. I shot two versions of the scene then spent an hour enjoying the splendor of the scene. The sun was warm, the air still, nobody was around, and there were no bears in sight. Paradise in the North. |
