One of the problems a photographer faces in Alaska is finding a viewpoint that is not blocked by thick vegetation. Except above timberline most areas are either forested, covered with willows, or marshy. As a result we end up shooting from the roadside more often than we want. This is an especial problem for 360° panographers, because half of the panorama is going to be road.

It was a beautiful day in a stunning location, but I was having no luck finding a view point that was not on the road. In desperation I crashed through the bushes below the road and started picking my way across the marshy meadows. At one point I was up to my knees in icy water, and sinking into the muddy bottom.

The valley was flooded because it had been dammed by beavers. Perfect - I climbed onto the beaver dam! It gave me exactly the unobstructed view that I wanted. But I had to shoot quickly because my weight was gradually breaking down the mud dam and there was imminent danger of initiating a sudden flood!
