43 Forested Islet
Prince William Sound Near Valdez, Alaska, USA
September 10, 2010

number_name

In addition to the tidewater glaciers on its north side and the glacier-capped mountains to north and east, Prince William Sound has numerous islands and islets and a long forested coastline.

The wildlife that can be seen from the boat varies with luck, but we saw several pods of orcas (killer whales), many sea otters, several colonies of Steller sea lions, bald eagles on the wing and on a nest, and dozens of species of sea birds. It is an exceptionally rich marine and coastal habitat and still mostly pristine and natural.

In 1989 the oil tanker Exxon Valdez ran aground near here and spilled its cargo of crude oil, devastating the environment of the sound. Fortunately little sign of that disaster is detectable today.
