42 Blue Iceberg
Prince William Sound Near Valdez, Alaska, USA
September 10, 2010

number_name

Amongst the range of colors in the floating ice a small number are a striking blue. The white ice contains tiny air spaces and is often fairly new. The blue ice has no air included, is denser and usually older.

The intensity of blue, seen in glaciers and glacial ice the world over, varies from just a pale hint to an intense saturated hue. In the area of ice our boat was circling through only a small percentage had this amazing color.

Captain Stephens piloted skillfully through the constantly moving ice floes to get us close-up views of several of these ultra-blue icebergs. This one stood about forty feet (12 meters) above the water. The color was astonishing from any angle, but reached a climax when the sun came out and shone through it from behind.
