28 Grayling Lake
Grayling Lake Wayside on the Dalton Highway, Alaska, USA
September 2, 2010

number_name

Grayling Lake is named for the Arctic grayling fish, a member of the salmon family. The lake fills a glacially excavated basin south of the Brooks Range, surrounded by low mountains. The fall colors had been increasing in intensity as I moved northwards, and here added a range of reds and purples in the low vegetation to the dominant yellow of the aspens and birch.

The Alaska Pipeline runs parallel to the road, above ground here to avoid disrupting the permafrost. The BLM (Bureau of Land Management) has provided a pit toilet, a rare site along the Dalton Highway. There are only a few formal campgrounds so people commonly stop for the night in gravel pits or viewpoints, note the fire ring.
