| The mid-point of the Dalton Highway is at Coldfoot, a drab but essential supply point with gas, food, and lodging, permanent population of 13. North of Coldfoot it is 240 miles (385 km) to the next gas station, hotel, store, telephone - anything!
Just north of Coldfoot is the small settlement of Wiseman, population 22, where a few hardy gold miners live in log cabins. It is located on the Koyukuk River in the foothills of the Brooks Range, with Gates of the Arctic National Park spreading to the west. Photographers love the "golden hour" when the sun is near the horizon. This far north it is more than an hour long. I camped that night at nearby Marion Creek, the weather clear but very cold. |
