24 Don at the Arctic Circle
66° 33' 44" North Latitude, on the Dalton Highway, Alaska, USA
September 2, 2010

The Arctic Circle represents the point north of which there are 24 hours of daylight in midsummer (polar day) and 24 hours of darkness in mid-winter (polar night). These occur on the summer and winter solstices.

I have been in the Arctic on the summer solstice, when the sun circles the horizon and never sets, but this trip was made close to the equinox, halfway between the solstices, with day and night of equal length. Because the sun never rises very far above the horizon at this latitude the lengthy twilight made it seem as if the day was more than twelve hours long.
