| The hot springs on the Liard River were known to the native peoples, but only developed during construction of the Alaska Highway in the 1940's. The US Army used them as a rest and recreation site for weary construction battalions. Now they are one of the most popular stops for summer travelers.
There are two developed pools, Alpha and Beta, an area of hot seeps, and a large warm marsh. The amount of heat released creates a micro-climate far warmer than adjacent areas at this latitude (near the BC-Yukon boundary). Plants typical of the Vancouver area are found close to the warm water. I have seen yellow monkeyflowers here that look identical to the ones that grow on coastal bluffs in central California |
