I drove the first thousand miles of my trip, from San Francisco to the Canadian border, in a day and a half. The weather was so beautiful that I made a side trip into the North Cascades.
A scenic highway loops over the north shoulder of Mount Baker, a huge strato-volcano, and affords a glimpse of the geologically unrelated North Cascades.
This jaw-dropping view of Mount Shuksan is right from the road, next to one of the country's most scenic ski resorts. The Canadian border is just a few miles away. |
