The original Lincoln Highway crossed the Sierra at Echo Summit, the route now taken by Highway 50. This was one of the emigrant trails of the 1840's and 50's, with a stretch near Lovers Leap where wagons had to emptied and lowered down the bedrock slope with ropes.
