The large low-lying area between Crescent City and the Smith River holds a wildlife-rich mosaic of sand dunes, shallow lakes, and dense coastal forest. It is not accessible by car, you must hike or ride a horse to traverse the dunes to the beach or the seasonal wetlands.
The most notable feature of this rather empty area is the Pelican Bay State Prison, a huge maximum security facility.
