Hiouchi was an Indian village near where the Middle Fork and South Fork of the Smith River come together. It is often sunny here on summer days when the fog lies thick and cold further downstream and the swimming holes in the river are local favorites.
Upstream from here the Middle Fork has cut a dramatic gorge. Ferns and moss cover the rocky cliffs - precipitation here averages over a hundred inches a year.
