South of Crescent City the Redwood Highway, Highway 101, curves and swoops along the high coastal ridge top, reaching a summit over a thousand feet above sea level before dropping down again. Del Norte Coast Redwoods State Park preserves old growth forest on the high bluffs, as well as the headwaters of Mill Creek. Mill Creek campground is set amongst huge old stumps in a second growth redwood forest.
At the north end of the park an abandoned stretch of the old highway serves as the coastal trail, with backcountry camp areas. The Damnation Creek Trail starts at the highway on the ridge crest and plunges all the way down to the ocean.
