Crescent City is California's northernmost town, located on the flats behind Point George, a few miles from the Oregon border. It has always been the main port for this remote corner of the state and has an important fishing fleet. The lighthouse on Battery Point is adjacent to a small city park where some tombstones from the shipwreck of the paddlewheel steamer Brother Jonathan can be seen. The Good Friday Alaskan earthquake of 1964 created a tidal wave that wrecked the downtown area, and swept incautious spectators off the harbor breakwater. - |
