This is a classic travel corridor, the only reasonably easy way through the Cascades from the Sacramento Valley north into Oregon. Indian trails were replaced by the single-track railroad, with many tunnels and bridges. Old Highway 99 ran mostly upslope from the tracks, connecting fishing camps, summer cabins, logging and mining camps.
Now Interstate 5 has been rammed through with massive cuts and fillls, but still has continuous curves and grades.
