Virtual Guidebook to Mount Shasta and the Klamath Mountains
Sacramento River Canyon
Shasta County, California
This is a classic travel corridor, the only reasonably easy way through the Cascades from the Sacramento Valley north into Oregon. Indian trails were replaced by the single-track railroad, with many tunnels and bridges. Old highway 99 ran mostly above it, connecting fihing camps, summer cabins, logging and mining camps. Now Interstate 5 has been rammed through with massive cuts and fillls, but still has continuous curves and grades.
