The Klamath has cut a deep winding canyon that runs west, then south, then north and finally west again, following weak zones in the complex geology of the Klamath Mountains.
There is still commercial timber back in these mountains, a little gold mining, and some river running. But for the most part it is wild and empty except for a straggle of development along the riverside highway. The most famous local resident, known as Sasquatch, or Bigfoot, is seldom seen.
