Elk Valley is a tiny green valley, a rare opening in the dense forest of the Siskiyou Mountains. It is a wet meadow that was probably a small lake in the recent geologic past. It is located on a spur road near the end of the south segment of the G-O Road, which passes through a striking serpentine bald, a barren area where sterile soils limit the plants that can survive.
Native Americans, Yuroks and Karoks, still camp here in summer to gather traditional materials, particularly bear grass for basketry.
