East of the Lava Beds
Modoc County California
Most of Modoc County is coverd with black basalt lava flows and associated features. East of Lava Beds National Monument the flows are generally older and vegetated, forests of Jeffrey pine alternating with grassy seasonal lakes. This is wide open sparsely populated country, hot in summer and bitter cold in winter.
