Rodeo Valley was the most developed part of the military installations on the Marin Headlands. The old army buildings now house The Headlands Institute, the Golden Gate Raptor Observatory, a large youth hostel, and the Headlands Center for the Arts. The Marine Mammal Center is located on one of the former Nike launch sites. Rodeo Beach is popular with surfers and dog walkers, and Rodeo Lagoon is a valuable wetland habitat.
As elsewhere in the headlands area huge gun emplacements are found on and inside the ridges. Battery Townsley was built to house 16-inch coastal defense guns, but they were never installed.
