Belvedere was once an island, joined to the Tiburon Peninsula by a tidal marsh. In the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries it was a favored summer vacation spot for San Franciscans, who moored their "arks" (houseboats) here. The marsh has been filled and canalized, and the high ridge covered with expensive homes with amazing views.
