Virtual Guidebook to

Northern and Central Nevada

Reno claims to be "The Biggest Little City in the World" and is indeed busy and growing rapidly, an important crossroads, warehousing, and entertainment center. Many people travel through Reno and across northern Nevada on Interstate 80, the old "Lincoln Highway" that runs coast to coast. This is also the California Trail of covered wagon days, and the route of the original transcontinental railroad.

But far fewer travel Highway 50, known as "the loneliest road in America", or visit the historic mining towns along its route. There are also remnants of the Pony Express in the magnificent empty valleys and long narrow mountain ranges of central Nevada.

There is even a national park out there - Great Basin, high in the Snake Range near Ely. It is one of the least visited parks in the country. At one time the oldest living tree in the world could be found there, a bristlecone pine that proved to be 5700 years old when cut down for scientific research.
