The Humboldt River Route
Now Interstate 80, Nevada

The Humboldt River flows from east to west across most of Nevada, a natural corridor cutting across the grain of the country. It provided not only an easy path, but water and grazing for the covered wagons following the California Trail.

Since then the transcontinental railroad, the Lincoln Highway (US 40) and Interstate 80 have all followed this route. Palisade Canyon had to be bypassed by the wagon trains, but provided a little scenic drama in the railroad era.
