Ely, like nearby Ruth, was built to serve the copper mines. Cooper boomed, busted, and has revived, along with a smaller amount of gold mining

Ely survives now mostly on traffic - it is where highways 50, 93 and 6 all come together. The town's industrial heritage is featured in its Nevada Northern Railroad Museum and "Ghost Train" excursion runs, and it is the nearest sizeable town to Great Basin National Park.
