The Virgin and Moapa Rivers flow into Lake Mead from the north and northeast. The Virgin has abundant water and has long been a Mormon farming center, and now Mesquite boasts casinos and suburban tract housing.
The Moapa River is largely underground and supports little agriculture or development. One of the striking sights along Intertstate 15 east of Las Vegas is the fireworks, liquor and tobacco store (free of state regulation and federal taxation) run by the Moapa Indian tribe.
