The Extraterrestrial Highway runs through some of the emptiest landscapes in the lower 48, from Warm Springs to Ash Springs (neither of which qualifies as a town).
The name comes from the unusual number of UFO sightings reported in this area, perhaps related to the huge military bases hidden behind the ranges. These include the nuclear test facility and top-secret Groom Air Force Base - also known as Area 51. The highway's name was bestowed in hopes of attracting a little tourism traffic, though the only travel-oriented business is the campy Little A'le'Inn bar and cafe at Rachel.
