My friends thought I was joking when I said I was driving two thousand miles to take landscape panoramas of Nebraska, and I will admit I had my doubts. But I enjoyed it much more than I expected.
First the history: the Oregon Trail, Pony Express, transcontinental railroad, Homestead National Monument and Willa Cather's home town of Red Cloud. The wide open spaces and dramatic skies of the plains, the fireflies at night (which I had never seen before). The Niobrara River in the north was unexpectedly beautiful and the Sand Hills country was rich in Indian history and seemingly just waiting for a return of the buffalo herds.
The half of Nebraska West of the Hundredth Meridian is typically western, with wide open spaces, arid grasslands, and even a few rocky bluffs. Nebraska East of the Hundredth Meridian on the other hand is Midwestern - greener, more settled, almost entirely in agriculture, with summer rains and high humidity.
