What is a virtual guidebook?
The Virtual Guidebooks use immersive imagery (VR, or virtual reality, panoramas) to allow you to travel, virtually, to interesting places.
Each panoramic image shows you exactly what it is like to be in that particular spot — you can look in any direction, as well as up and down. You can zoom in and out, and some images have interactive captions that tell you just what you are looking at.
Use your mouse to rotate the panorama.
The panoramas are arranged geographically, with maps to help you locate the area you want. There are also thematic lists — if you are interested, for example, in all the panoramas of lighthouses. There are lists of recommended books and movies for each geographic area, and galleries of art prints and posters. For more information on the organization of this site, see the Help page.
There are almost 5000 panoramas available on this site, spanning western North America from Baja California to the Canadian Arctic, plus Hawaii and the South Pacific.
