Before construction of the Wawona Tunnel in 1933 the Wawona Road ran high up over a ridge to Inspiration Point. Now motorists approaching Yosemite Valley from the south are suddenly greeted by a classic view of Yosemite Valley as they exit the tunnel. There are two parking lots at the viewpoint, which is variously known as Tunnel View and Discovery View.
The Wawona Tunnel was blasted through solid granite and remains mostly unlined. It is the longest road tunnel in California, 4233 feet (1290 m) long.
