San Simeon

San Simeon was just a tiny coastal village until William Randolph Hearst began construction of his palatial "castle" just inland on "La Cuesta Encantada" (the enchanted hill). Then San Simeon became a busy base for construction, and a port for import of building materials, furnishings, artwork, and various treasures destined for the castle.

Today San Simeon proper consists of the old country store, a couple of Hearst Ranch residences and warehouses, and the state park beach and pier. Nearby a compact commercial area has been developed to serve the huge numbers of people coming to visit the castle.
