Every inch of the Pacific Grove shoreline is now open to the public. The pathway along the calm Monterey Bay side blazes with magic carpet iceplant in April, big waves from the open Pacific crash against the rocks at Point Pinos, and Spanish Bay offers great beach walking. In the mid-1980's I lived in Pacific Grove and sometimes walked to work in Monterey along this shore.
The Point Pinos Lighthouse is the oldest continuously-operating light on the west coast, since 1855. It is a modest keepers cottage with lighthouse tower on top. Unlike many of the remote stations along the coast it was close to town and some of the keepers led busy social lives.
