The broad bay between Pebble Beach and Point Lobos is one of the most famous and best-loved stretches of the California coast.
The shoreline of the town of Carmel is lined with sugar-sand beaches and unpretentious but elegant houses. Then there is a broad public beach across the mouth of the Carmel River, and finally, a small steep crescent of sand named for the nearby Camelite monastery. It is here that a branch of the Monterey Submarine Canyon comes almost to shore.
